Tech demo 1999-2001
The original technology demo of Defection was developed as a Baldur's Gate style isometric RPG with detailed prerendered backdrops broken down into tiles for a low storage footprint. The demo was further developed to include 3D models overlayed onto 2D backgrounds for more flexible character animation. The engine features full pathfinding, fog or war and dynamic weather effects.
Tech demo 2001-2002
The subsequent tech demo was taken a step further and re-developed into a fully fleged 3D RPG. Engine features included characters animated through matrix palette skinning, post processing glow effects, dynamic lighting and weather effects.
